On a gorgeous Wednesday evening, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and some of its good friends got together for a night full of art, music, and fun. now on paper, which took place on March 7, provided an opportunity for guests to view and purchase original works on paper by emerging artists as well as take part in a silent auction featuring works from the Atelier, our first Artist in Residency program.

Calling all Scholastic Art Award winners ages 20 and up! The Alliance would like to invite you to donate small works on paper (drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, etc.) for now on paper.

This annual fundraiser and art auction, will be held on March 7 at The Upper Crust in New York City and features special guest Myla Goldberg, author of Bee Season and Scholastic Awards alum, with her band The Walking Hellos. And, we’d love to feature your original work on paper too! Participating artists will receive complimentary general admission to now on paper and will have the opportunity to participate in alumni programs in the future.

Mara and I recently spent two weeks inside a set of storefront windows as part of Atelier, a project set up by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and hosted by the World Financial Center. Joining us behind the glass were five fellow Alliance Alumni and our favorite tweeter Nora Gomez.

When Mara works she tends to spread out. And while she initially attempted to adhere to the intended set up (i.e. sitting on a stool and painting on canvas at an easel), she quickly abandoned all of those things and made a nest for herself on the floor, moving from canvas to paper. Read More

As we head into summer, we bid farewell to our 2011 season. The last couple of months have been busy and full of excitement with our National Celebration, Carnegie Hall Awards Ceremony, Gold Key Gala, ART.WRITE.NOW. National Exhibition and Alumni Atelier project! We began our season last year with 185,000 submissions of art and writing from across the country and ended our season in late May with 800 National Award winners flocking to New York City for National Events. Recently, the Alliance and some of its good friends got together for a night full of art, fashion, music and fun. Now Showing, which took place on March 9, was a silent auction featuring emerging artists, beats spun by DJ Gilles Wasserman, live music by Max Vernon and a performance by chamber-rock trio Rasputina. To top that all off, there were also literary readings by Lili Taylor and Jesse Eisenberg.

Primary role: As Senior Manager of External Relations, Venas Matthews-Bazin oversees all components of meetings and events here at the Alliance. Her keen attention to detail and communication skills play a big role as she works with multiple venues, negotiates contracts with vendors, selects event locations, determines the design and layout of event spaces, and oversees the audio-visual and special effects for programs. In addition, she’s in charge of organizing, launching and managing the Alliance’s fundraising campaigns, including the Gold Key Society and the Friends of the Alliance. Her job might sound tough, but she also gets to sample and select all of the yummy catering menus for events too!

Secret fact: Venas always wanted to be a lawyer. She also wanted to be a gymnast until five years ago when she actually practiced again on the uneven parallel bar.

Venas: One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Before coming to the Alliance, I worked for Time Warner, The Apollo and MTV Networks—and when I say Networks I mean the whole company of MTV brands. Read More
