. . .and well, it was really cold there! But luckily the freezing temps could not deter arts lovers in Kansas City. There was a phenomenal turn out at Leedy-Voulkos Art Center last week for the opening of our latest stop in the Art.Write.Now Tour up until February 22. Around 1,000 people showed up over the course of the night!

I got to the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center as soon as I landed in KC. Or maybe after a BBQ sandwich. No shame, I was in Kansas City! To be totally upfront, I was overwhelmed by the exhibition before I even made it up the main staircase. It was my first time seeing an Art.Write.Now exhibition and I was beyond excited. And you know what? There was totally a reason to be. The show is stunning.

The official traveling exhibition of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has kicked off in Motor City at the College for Creative Studies. More than 100 pieces of art and writing, plus the complete works of the five National Student Poets, are available for all visitors to see, read and experience.

The Art.Write.Now Tour is an important part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards as it not only shares the brilliant and bold works of our nation’s most creative teens, but it also inspires other students to express their talent and for adults to spread the word to teens in their lives. I have to say, I had a great time in Portland. As a New Yorker, I found it wonderfully bizarre – great grilled cheese waffle sandwiches, hybrid karaoke nights everywhere, and under any and all circumstances pedestrians rule the streets. Seriously, cars will come to a screeching halt just to let you safely jaywalk. Amazing!
