Three years ago, the Alumni Council of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards created a residency for Alumni. A Suite of One’s Own: A Writer’s Residency at the historic Roosevelt Hotel in the heart of New York City was created to give the gift of time and space for a writer in need of a retreat from, in the words of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards founder Maurice R. Robinson, “the standardizing pressure of adult life.” This year, two Alumnae, Olga Rukovets and Shannelle Mills, participated in the residency. For the third year in a row, the Alumni Council of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented A Suite of One’s Own: A Writer’s Residency for Alumni of the Scholastic Awards. Two Alums will have the chance to spend a week in their own suites at The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. This writer’s residency will give the residents time and space to focus on their writing.

For the second year in a row, the Scholastic Awards Alumni Council presented Alums with monetary grants to help them pursue creative endeavors. This year, six Alums were selected to receive $1,000 grants to help them work on projects ranging from 3D printing to DNA testing to staging a performance that combines music, song, and sign language.
