Singers and American Sign Language performers participate in Alumni Microgrant recipient Katherine Dubbs’ Explorations: Stories of Love & Travel

For the second year in a row, the Scholastic Awards Alumni Council awarded monetary grants to Alums to help them pursue creative endeavors. This year, six Alums were selected to receive $1,000 grants to help them work on projects ranging from 3D printing to DNA testing to staging a performance that combines music, song, and sign language. The Alumni Council of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers presented their first group exhibition, Now.After, from June 19–July 1 at FRONT Art Space in New York City. For the second year in a row, the Alumni Council of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards accepted applications for A Suite of One’s Own: A Writer’s Residency, created for Alumni of the Scholastic Awards. This residency is the chance for two Alums to spend a week in a suite at The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, away from what Scholastic Awards founder Maurice R. Robinson called the “standardizing pressures of adult life” to focus on their writing. Read More

Antonio Pulgarin, Alumni Council member and photographer, kicked off our new #AlumniTakeover campaign on social media by posting images from his photo shoot in Colombia to the Scholastic Awards Instagram for one week in August. Since then, Alums Winston Chmielinski and Loretta Lopez have taken the Scholastic Awards to Germany for the Berlin Art Festival and to Thailand, China, and around New York City. Read More
