Our booth at NAEA 2016

Scholastic Awards staff member Sazia Afrin attended the National Art Education Association Conference this year. The annual NAEA conferences are a chance for art educators from across the country to network, learn about new teaching methods, techniques, and materials, and to have fun! It’s also an opportunity for the Scholastic Awards to meet the educators who participate in our program and to let them know about all of the ways we support creative teens with our recognition, exhibition, publication, scholarships, and workshops programs.

We asked Sazia to tell us about her experience there, and why NAEA is one of our favorite conventions to attend each year!

The convention hall was full of adults with dyed hair and face paint, which was great to see.

From wine glasses to refrigerator magnets, it was all about doodling and decorating. Many educators carried empty wine glasses as they doodled at one of the interactive booths featuring making stations.

Many of the booths gave away creative items like paint samples and paper, and experienced educators brought small bags with them to carry all of the giveaways!

At the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards booth, we had Andy Warhol (or a cardboard cut-out of him!) and a selfie stick. Dozens of educators stopped by for a photo-op with one of our most celebrated Alumni!

Next to us was the Lion King Experience, a group that provides resources to educators in order to have a successful Lion King production at their school. I was drawn to their booth by a shadow puppet making station and the show using the puppets created onsite.

Among the most popular booths was the Golden Artist Colors booth. One of their giveaways was a flyer advertising the Golden Educators Residency program, which they host in collaboration with the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The educators selected for the 2016 residency will be announced at our National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 2!

Educators were also very excited about the Scholastic Art Magazine booth and loved the classroom posters they were giving away.

NAEA is full of fun, surprises, creativity, and enthusiastic educators whose love of art inspires their students. Getting to know these educators is always exciting and we appreciate all that they do for their students in and outside of the classroom!

Thanks, Sazia! And we look forward to meeting even more educators at NAEA 2017!
